Raphael was born in Italy over 500 years ago. He worked as an artist during the time known as the 'Renaissance'. He learnt a lot by looking at the work of other artists of his time like Leonardo Da Vinci. Many of his paintings were frescos (painted on walls) in the Vatican where the head of the Catholic church, the Pope, resides in Rome.
One of Raphael's most famous paintings is called The School of Athens (seen below) where he shows some of the great philosophers of history, including Socrates, Plato, Aristotle and Pythagoras.
