Artist: Edouard Manet
Dates: 1832 - 1883
Nationality: French
Style: Realism/Impressionism

Edouard Manet was a French artist who lived during the 1800s. Unlike many artists of his time he came from quite a wealthy family and therefore did not really need to earn a living from selling his paintings.

Manet painted scenes and people from everyday life in Paris, usually showing his subjects in the way he would have seen them - in a realistic, natural and honest manner. Because of this approach to his subjects Manet is often described as a Realist. Manet spent time with the group of painters known as the Impressionists although he never exhibited with them. Some of his later paintings are very 'impressionistic' in style.

Manet found it hard to acheive any recognition for his work during his career as his approach to his subjects and his style of painting was seen as different and new - not what the art critics and the French people were used to. This lack of interest and harsh criticism of his work always saddened Manet, as all he really wanted was to have his art accepted by the French people. It was not, in fact, until very late in his life that he was able to gain some praise for his work.

Nowadays Manet is recognised as being an innovator with his painting style and the subjects he chose. His work influenced many artists of his time and many of the trends in modern art. Paul Gauguin, another great French artist once said that "Painting begins with Manet".

Here are three paintings by this great French painter.
