by Sir Lawrence Gowing CBC (1918-1991)

Sir Lawrence Gowing, the highly regarded British painter, art historian, teacher and author, has created the optimum record of the Louvre and its masterpieces. This is the art lovers ultimate coffee table book with over 800 color illustrations depicting the treasures of the Louvre.

The text provides a plethera of information beginning with an introduction by Michel Laclotte who at the time of writing was Director General of the Louvre and head Curator of the department of paintings. Michael takes us through the architectural history of the Musee du louvre that stretches over 8 centuries from its beginnings as a palace to modern day museum.

Sir Lawrence provides the body of the text as 115 short essays on artists and their art, each essay is a work of art in its self, informative and entertaining.

Paintings in the Louvre is a very important art resource and a valuable addition to the literature collection of any art enthusiast.
