D. Phelps is a poet, visual and performance artist, and teacher whose work seeks to integrate the visual and performance arts with literary disciplines giving voice to the often unspoken experiences of womanhood and to annihilation and death of self, bewilderment and awe, fertility and regeneration in the unfolding mysteries of the natural and the surreal.
Her poetry has been published in several anthologies including The American Poetry Anthology Vol. VIII, No.2; Dance on the Horizon; Songs On the Wind; Promise Autumn 2001, Aries 2001, a literary journal of Texas Wesleyan University; and New Texas 2001, a literary journal of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. She has performed at venues throughout the San Antonio area including the Blue Door Gallery; The Center for Spirituality and Art, the Tearoom at Viva, the San Antonio Public Library, the Bulverde Public Library, various elementary schools, the San Antonio Peace Center, and at Zara Gallery of San Antonio.
Recent awards include Third Place Prize, Writer's Resource Center Internet Website Epistle Contest, August 2000; Galaxy of Verse Prize, Poetry Society of Texas, April 2000; and The Barney Award, Poetry Society of Texas, October 2000. She is contributing editor for a chapbook anthology of poetry entitled Here Is My Spirit, (Gotita Press 1999) and editor of Through the Keyhole 2001, a literary journal of the Judson Montessori School of San Antonio, Texas.
As a visual artist she works as a painter, photographer and sculptor. Recent showings of her work include: the Divina et Femina III n Sacred Domesticity Conference (where selections of her poetry from Here Is My Spirit were also read), University of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, May 2000; the San Antonio Art League 70th Annual San Antonio Artists Exhibition, April-May, 2000 where she was awarded a Contributor's Prize; the Summer Showcase at Limner Gallery, New York City. Aug 2000, in Vida Sagrada, an exhibition of mixed media paintings at Zara Gallery of San Antonio, and is published as cover art for Encore 2000, an annual publication of the National Federation of State Poetry Societies, and in Aries 2001.
Her photography has appeared in Aries 2000, at Zara Gallery in San Antonio during Fotoseptiembre, September, 2000; and at Zara Gallery as a part of the collaborative installation, 'Fear of Being Water', March, 2001. Ms. Phelps is a member of The Academy of American Poets, The Poetry Society of Texas, and the National Federation of State Poetry Societies, The San Antonio Art League, and Gemini Ink. She is currently on the Texas Commission on the Arts roster of Artists in Education in the literary discipline and is represented as a performance artist by Class Acts, a San Antonio based arts organization providing professional artists opportunities to work in schools and communities.
As a teacher, Ms. Phelps has taught fine arts including drama, English, poetry, and visual art to students of all ages in schools, museums, and community organizations since 1974. Her work is represented by The Giving Tree Gallery in East Sandwich, Massachusetts, Zara Gallery in San Antonio, and Teeks Gallery in Wimberley, Texas. She received her B.F.A. from The University of Texas at Austin, and currently maintains her studio in Bulverde, Texas.
